Robot dogs can do more than one task, but are they going to become the future of patrolling?

Robotics already represent a major disruptive technology in a wide swath of industries, in tasks ranging from production lines to consumer interactions. Companies like Boston Dynamics and Ghost Robotics are creating robot dogs that can fulfill the demands of this tech-driven world. These robot dogs are designed to explore challenging environments—including those that are wet, dusty, confined, and even toxic. This article features how robot dogs are shaping the future.

In 2016, Boston Dynamics introduced their first-ever robot dog “Spot”. Spot is a compact, nimble four-legged robot that can trot around your office, home, or outdoors. It can map its environment, sense and avoid obstacles, climb stairs, and open doors. It can also fetch you a drink. In one deployment, a construction firm in Canada used a Spot robot to automate the capture of thousands of images weekly on a 500,000 square foot building site, creating an ongoing record of progress and enabling the builders to identify growing problems and inefficiencies early. Ford is another company using robot dogs in manufacturing.

Recently, the US tested robot dogs to patrol its border. The robot dogs are manufactured by Ghost Robotics, a security tech company that works with the military. The plan is for the machines to patrol the border, videoing and scanning around them as they go. This has led to privacy concerns about the surveillance of those who live near the border without consent.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation voiced unease at the development and warned of mission creep – when technologies are given to law enforcement only for specific or extreme cases, but then are used outside of those boundaries.

It has not yet been announced if the robot dogs will become a permanent fixture along the border. Now, even though these robot dogs are capable of doing more than one task are they going to become the future of patrolling?
