Scientists have created a magnetically-manipulated slime robot that could reduce the invasiveness of some surgeries

Scientists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have created a magnetic slime robot. It can carry out tasks like fixing broken circuits and picking up objects. They also think one day it could be put inside the human body to do things like finding items that have been swallowed by accident.

The slime robot can move around controlled by magnets, surround things in the shape of a C or O and pick them up, and can even interconnect electrodes. “The ultimate goal is to deploy it like a robot,” Zhang told The Guardian. “We still consider it as fundamental research trying to understand its material properties.”

The slime robot is made from a blend of polyvinyl alcohol (a polymer), borax, and neodymium magnet particles. The result is a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves like a liquid or solid depending on force and can be controlled using external magnets. There is no robotics inside the slime at present, but you can steer it like a robot and the “ultimate goal” is to use it like one, according to researcher and co-creator Li Zhang.

While the team has no immediate plans to test it in a medical setting, the scientists envisage the slime could be useful in the digestive system, for example in reducing the harm from a small swallowed battery. “To avoid toxic electrolytes leaking out, we can maybe use this kind of slime robot to do an encapsulation, to form some kind of inert coating,” Chang said.

Magnetic miniature soft-bodied robots allow non-invasive access to restricted spaces and provide ideal solutions for minimally invasive surgery, micromanipulation, and targeted drug delivery. However, the existing elastomer-based (silicone) and fluid-based (ferrofluid or liquid metal) magnetically actuated miniature soft robots have limitations. In the study, non-Newtonian fluid-based magnetically actuated slime robots with both the adaptability of elastomer-based robots and reconfigurable significant deformation capabilities of fluid-based robots are demonstrated. The robots can negotiate through narrow channels with a diameter of 1.5 mm and maneuver on multiple substrates in complex environments. The proposed slime robot implements various functions, including grasping solid objects, swallowing and transporting harmful things, human motion monitoring, and circuit switching and repair.

Shape-shifting is a novel concept that might seem inapplicable to sturdy and robust objects like robots. But the truth is that they are making rapid strides in every field including space exploration. Space exploration for ages has evolved and made intergalactic travel possible because of a number of innovative technologies. However, a constant challenge space explorers face is constricted spaces which emanate from problems of payload management. The modular shape-shifting robots are redefining the way space is imagined in terms of its utility and flexibility, so much so that scientists consider them as next-generation robots.

How the idea took shape?

Modelled on the lines of tensegrity robots, which usually have fibres changing shape according to the code, are of delicate build with an ability to transfigure into different shapes. The tensegrity project was initially started as a pet project to design one such robot to overcome challenges manoeuvring treacherous surfaces on mars. This was in 2015, and by 2019 NASA was able to develop a shape shifting robot to explore Saturn’s moon. They could deploy mini robots which are surface agnostic, by changing their form and shape with capabilities of flying, rolling, floating and swimming, all included in one machine. NASA could also develop an Origami-inspired robot, PUFFER, an acronym for Pop up Flat Folding Explorer Robot, designed to be a compact robot with adjustable and inward collapsible wheels giving it a crab-like movement. It could crawl into nooks and corners which are too small, a critical manoeuvre for Mar’s exploration.

Advances in Shape-shifting Robotics:

A team of scientists from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the University of Calgary developed ElectroVoxel, a shape-shifting robot designed particularly for space exploration. Cubical modules, techniques that are co-bots, have edges lined with electromagnetic coils. By controlling the current magnitude and polarity they move along, cling to each other, or move away. This mechanism is the basic mode of reconfiguration among different cubes. Currently, the bot is in a working prototype stage, which proves that the functionalities it boasts of, are possible.

Spurred by the idea of Cubesats of 2003, these miniature robots occupy minimal space by virtue of their design. It is indeed difficult to design a robot for space than for earth, because of the constraints it places on it in terms of size and volume. ElectroVox not only improves the space for human manoeuvre but also holds the potential to reduce the payload drastically. Martin Nisser, Ph.D student at MIT and the lead author of the study says, unlike in other projects, these bots do not depend on artificial intelligence, which leaves lots of room for improvisation by individuals to design shapes beyond what a computer can achieve.

Nisser says, once these bots are made strong enough to counter the earth’s gravity, it will be possible to construct fluid and reconfigurable structures on earth also.

The Story: After conducting extensive research on robotics and artificial intelligence, Geoff purchased a humanoid robot a few years ago. Emma is mostly an imitation of a beautiful lady with blue eyes and wheatish skin. Over time, Geoff started becoming extremely close with the humanoid robot.

Now, although Emma is unable to stand by herself, Geoff is taking her outside in the car. Since the humanoid robot is powered by artificial intelligence, it is becoming smarter with every tech development.

Geoff’s affection towards Emma has gone to a length where he considers the humanoid his wife and also gave her a ring.

Statistics: This is not the first time a person is showing signs of emotion toward a robot. According to a 2015 study, humans were seen showing equal empathy to robots when they are in pain. Especially, they are very concerned about humanoid robots.

The report states, “This study provides the first physiological evidence of humans’ ability to empathize with robot pain and highlights the difference in empathy for humans and robots.”

Created in February 2019, she had her first solo show at the University of Oxford, ‘Unsecured Futures’, where her art encouraged viewers to think about our rapidly changing world. Today, a dominant mindset is that of humanism, where art is an entirely human affair, stemming from human agency. However, current thinking suggests we are edging away from humanism, into a time where machines and algorithms influence our behavior to a point where our ‘agency’ isn’t just our own. It is starting to get outsourced to the decisions and suggestions of algorithms, and complete human autonomy starts to look less robust. Ai-Da creates art because art no longer has to be restrained by the requirement of human agency alone.

However, there is a dilemma in the art world: can Ai-Da’s creations be considered art? If she is only capable of drawing inspiration from what already exists, can she truly be considered an artist?

With rapidly developing artificial intelligence, growing accessibility to supercomputers, and machine learning on the up, Ai-Da – named after the computing pioneer Ada Lovelace – exists as a “comment and critique” on rapid technological change.

Last year, she became the first humanoid robot to create a self-portrait. In other words, a robot with no “self” was able to create a self-portrait. “This is an important moment for AI art. Ai-Da’s works raise questions about whether robots can genuinely be creative,” Priya Khanchandani, Head of Curatorial at The Design Museum in London, said in a statement.
