Flying Robots Picking Fruits: Leveraging AI for Automatic Fruit Harvesting

AI

Flying robots can now pluck different fruits by leveraging AI to drive revenue

Fruit harvesting is a tiring and rigorous job for professionals involved in fruit farming worldwide. There is always a proper time to pluck fruits, different time periods for different fruits. The introduction of cutting-edge technologies like AI, machine learning, and deep learning has transformed the overall process of fruit harvesting. Thus, fruit farmers can leverage AI for automatic fruit harvesting to avoid any further wastage of seasonal fruits— fruits are one of the most wasted produces in the global market. The emergence of robotics and AI has manufactured flying robots or fruit-picking robots in some parts of the world where fruit farmers can use robots in fruit harvesting.

The Mechanism Behind Flying Robots Picking Fruits

The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has drastically affected fruit harvesting with all the restrictions and lockdowns. Flying robots with AI mechanisms can identify the right fruits for plucking and help in picking them autonomously. These fruit-picking robots can help fruit farmers to save a huge amount of money and reduce fruit wastage per year globally. Flying robots can work throughout the days and nights to pick up only ripe fruits at the right time. The robots provide real-time updates to a central computer on the volume and value of fruit picked while pruning the orchards afterward.

Fruit-picking robots leverage AI perception algorithms to spot trees as well as vision algorithms to identify the perfectly ripen fruit among the tree full of raw or foliage. These fruit-picking robots choose the best approach to pluck fruits with their robotic picking arms. Robots in fruit harvesting are helping to harvest large orchards with a single autonomous digital brain. Fruit-picking robots leverage AI with computer vision, data fusion, and perception, aeronautical engineering, robotics as well as state-of-the-art flight control for effective flying.

This has started a concern regarding the replacement of human fruit-pickers with robots in automatic fruit harvesting. But the tech companies have ensured that these flying robots are built to work with human employees for a long period of time to boost productivity and earn more revenue than previous years. There is high flexibility for robots in fruit harvesting that enables them to harvest multiple fruits at a time without any overlapping.

There are multiple tech companies that are focused on building new cutting-edge technologies for the agricultural sector such as satellites, drones, robots, smart irrigation systems, and many more. An Israeli-based start-up, Tevel Aerobotics Technologies, is set to launch this flying robot or fruit-picking robot for effective automatic fruit harvesting. The aim of this AgTech start-up is to transform manual fruit harvesting into automatic fruit harvesting with flying autonomous robots or fruit-picking robots.

Another fruit-picking robot known as Robocrop is already on trial to pick over 25,000 raspberries per day. Robocrop plucks raspberries with its robotic arms and deposits those into a waiting punnet. The time-efficient process takes almost a minute for each raspberry while leveraging sensors and hi-tech 3D cameras that can zoom in on ripe fruits with the help of AI and machine learning algorithms.

Attention Human Teachers!! Robot Teachers Are on Your Way

Robot Teachers

How can robots be used as teachers? Here are the benefits and drawbacks of robot teachers

Advances in technologies have continued to play an important role in healthcare, manufacturing, communication, travel, and also in education. The use of simulation technologies has proven to be a worthy element in the educational sector. The use of robotics in the education environment has exhibited an increased value in everyday learning.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are considered integral aspects of the future learning environment across the globe. Assimilating human learning attributes into the field of robotics can enable robots to distribute the integrated knowledge to students studying in colleges or universities.

The use of robots to teach students is in the experimental stage but very soon it will be taking place. On that note, is there any possibility that robots might replace human teachers and take over the educational system?

Moving forward to find the answer to the above question, let’s find out how robots can be used as teachers, types of robots that can be used as teachers, benefits, and drawbacks.

Using robots in the classroom is something beyond telepresence where the teacher stays remotely connected to students with the help of robots. Various types of robots are being used as teachers in the classroom. The type of robots depends on the age group of the students and the field of study.

Boe-bot Robots

These are simple robots whose main elements include microprocessors that are placed on wheels. Boe-bots can identify the distance from an object, navigate and steer by sensing light based on the program assimilated into their system. These robots are also provided with light and sound mechanisms to divulge contact sensor status and escape edges of a room.

Advanced Toolkits

Smaller robots inducted with modern toolkits are generally used to provide robotics or computer science lessons. The toolkits are created so that students can easily handle the robot to gain direct learning experience on a broad range of topics.

Humanoids

Humanoids are human-like robots that are more viable for students to interact with. These are usually implemented to provide language lessons as they can give real-time responses. The structure of the humanoid robots is similar to humans, and they play a crucial role in settling issues related to shyness, reluctance, confidence, and frustration among students.

How Do Robots Teach?

Already we can witness robots teaching in the classroom, but presently they are not replacing teachers completely, rather when any teacher is absent robots are used by the colleges and universities.

There is a speech recognition software inducted in the robots and this helps them to explicate what a human is trying to say. This improves the reading and understanding techniques of robots. Robot teachers are also provided with projectors that enable them to teach the subject matter in an interesting way, which helps in developing curiosity among students.

Benefits of Robot Teachers

Students can hold a grip of technological skills in an advanced way while interacting with a robot teacher. Also, robot teachers are cost-effective because they are not required to get paid every month.

Students can get the latest information as robot teachers are programmed with up-to-date information and also, they can project computer displays from any area of a classroom.

Drawbacks of Robot Teachers

Robot teachers do not need to get paid but they require high charging to operate smoothly and thus this leads to spending on electricity in a huge quantity. Also, for the proper function of robot teachers, classrooms must be equipped with strong internet connections.

Students often go through a rough emotional period; in such situations, a robot teacher will not be of any use because robots do not have feelings.

Further robot teachers cannot think creatively and innovatively

Can Robots Replace Teachers?

An educational robot can be implemented in the creation of the pattern and structure of learning programs, as it includes the application of expensive technologies. Implementing such technologies as an alternative to human instruction globally might be a difficult process.

Furthermore, if the entire teaching curriculum is based on computer programs, it can make human teaching seem unnecessary. This is because of the related technological limitations that are associated, like imprecise emotion or speech recognition.

Although robots can act as engaging educational tools within classrooms, it might be unlikely for them to replace humans as teachers, any time soon.

There is no doubt that robots can be used as a substitute for teachers when required like in the absence of any teacher but a complete replacement of teachers seems to be merely impossible.

Queering Robots: Is LGBTQ+ Community Considered in Robot and AI Development?

Queering Robots

Empowering LGBTQ+ community through technology

The technology of robots is thriving in multiple sectors from healthcare, manufacturing, retail, tourism, travel, etc. Development is taking place everywhere in every community but how far the minority groups like the LGBTQ+ community is considered in robot and AI development? Are they included in this rapid development?

The introduction of robots into society elevates ethical, legal, and societal concerns. There is a deep-routed problem in any AI applications regarding discrimination and bias.

In a new short paper in the journal ‘Nature Machine Intelligence’, Roger A. Søraa from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and co-authors Eduard Fosch-Villaronga from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and Adam Poulsen from Charles Sturt University in Australia discussed the demand for queering of robots.

Many drag queen Twitter accounts were examined by an AI-driven tool that predicts and confronts evolving threats. This tool was mainly created to evaluate toxicity levels of online content. This AI-driven tool indicated that the drag queen accounts have greater frequency than other toxic accounts. The AI-driven tool is trained to confront any type of toxic threats, so without understanding the content entirely these AI-driven moderation tools could hinder the freedom of speech of the minority community.

Søraa and his colleagues pointed out that technology is not designed in a vacuum but instead reflects biases and reproduces societal values and beliefs. This means if the LGBTQ+ community is included in technology envisage it could surely empower them. Also, all-rounded robotics could help eliminate the loneliness experienced by many queer adults. In the sector of education, such robotic technology can help children and young adults and can support them when they convey complicated feelings about their sexual attitude or gender identity.

There has been a lack in the inclusion of queer perspectives on robots and machines. This should be researched well and the robots should be designed keeping in mind this criterion. The designers should build a robot that talks, walks, and acts like the LGBTQ+ community.

Researchers have highlighted that it is vital that we build mechanisms and policies that recognize the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and non-discrimination, also for the LGBTQ+ community in the development and use of robots and AI.

The understanding of how technologies affect the LGBTQ+ community is not explored largely. Queer people mostly remain silent, powerless and they don’t understand how these technologies might affect them. Users of technology generate an extensive entanglement of social constructions, relations, and practices. Everybody can make technology work; everyone understands the importance and presence of technology so there is no reason to exclude the minorities.

Holistic insertion of strategies on multiple levels from LGBTQ+ communities, as well as individuals, could ease the understanding of the challenges around discrimination and the queer community. The recent work, for example, outlier initiatives pushing for diversity in robotics and AI. The work includes CSIRO’s diversity & inclusion at the robotics and autonomous systems group and queer in AI. Still, more research is needed to remove the underlying problem of how science has ignored and largely continues to ignore the LGBTQ+ community.

Diversity is about communicating the potential consequence of prejudice on society as a whole and, in particular, on minority groups. On this note, it is important that we build mechanisms and policies that highlight the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and non-discrimination for the LGBTQ+ community as well in the development and use of robots and AI.

Beware: Essential Steps to Identify and Prevent Malicious Bot Traffic

Bot traffic

Essential steps to be followed for identifying and preventing malicious bot traffic

The advent of AI-based chatbots has introduced a hot term in the tech-driven world known as bot traffic. It does not only have any negative connotation in computer systems, but it is neutral— depending on the purpose of a bot. There are multiple steps in identifying bot traffic as well as in preventing bot traffic efficiently and effectively. On one hand, bots can be beneficial to companies such as Siri or Alexa while on the other hand, some malicious bots can perform a new form of cyberattacks such as credential stuffing, unauthorized web crawlers, DDoS attacks, and many more. Thus, companies need to look for malicious bots for effective management of bot traffic. Let’s explore some of the essential steps to identify and prevent malicious bot traffic for the welfare of an organization.

There are different kinds of web bot traffic for organizations to know— good bots such as search engine bots, partner bots, and vendor bots; commercial bots include aggregator bots, price comparison bots, copyright bots, and finally bad bots like web scraping bots, credential stuffing bots, spam bots, ad fraud bots, Denial of Service (DoS) bots, as well as card fraud bots.

Essential steps in identifying bot traffic

  • A sudden spike in pageviews: Malicious bots can create bot traffic through a sudden spike in pageviews where it can be seen that bots are clicking through a website all the time
  • A sudden spike in bounce rate: It is one of the essential ways of identifying bot traffic where the bots are being directed at only one page leading to a higher bounce rate suddenly
  • Increase in junk: One can identify bot traffic through an increase in junk conversion like fake accounts, fake names in contact forms, fake numbers, and many more are done by spambots or malicious bots
  • Increase in traffic: Identifying bit traffic is easy when one can observe a sudden increase in traffic in a period of one day or one week instead of a gradual increase in web traffic through SEO, paid search, and many more activities
  • Slow server performance: Bot traffic can get stressed out due to a sudden spike in multiple malicious bots hitting at the same period of time that in turn can slow down the server performance
  • Mysterious locations: One way in identifying malicious bot traffic is to seek mysterious locations that are out of the target locations of a business

Essential steps in preventing bot traffic

  • Block outdated browsers: Malicious bots can be prevented if an organization can block outdated browsers and install modern browsers to catch and prevent bot traffic efficiently
  • Disallow proxy services: Cybercriminals will be discouraged from entering mobile apps, APIs, and many more by disallowing easy access to proxy services
  • Accurate evaluation of traffic: Bot traffic can occur gradually over a long period of time but to prevent sudden high bounce rates, slow server performance, etc. it is essential to accurately evaluate bot traffic and its sources
  • Proper monitoring: Monitoring is required on a daily basis to prevent failed log-in attempts, an increase in failed validations, and many more
  • Implementation of WAF: A Web Application Firewall (WAF) can be implemented to prevent bot traffic in between a web application and a client where the traffic and resources move towards the WAF before entering the client’s account
  • IP-based protection: IP-based protection should be installed in preventing bot traffic to block suspicious IP addresses from malicious bots
