Living with Humanoids: Can We Survive the Robotics Apocalypse?

Humanoid

Here are some life-like humanoid robots making this trend continue to rise in years to come.

Kodomoroid and Otonaroid – The First Android Newscasters

In 2014, Japanese scientists, led by robotics professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, unveiled the world’s first news-reading android newscasters, named Kodomoroid and Otonaroid, who can interact with humans, read the news and Tweets in several different voices. Kodomoroid is a teleoperated android robot resembling a human child, who has the potential to outpace that of its human equivalent, reciting reports gleaned from around the world. Conversely, Otonaroid resembles an adult female, who has been hired as a robot science communicator for Miraikan, the national museum of emerging science and innovation.

Geminoid DK – An Ultra-Realistic, Humanoid Robot

Designed with a collaboration between a private Japanese firm and Osaka University, under the supervision of Hiroshi Ishiguro, the director of the university’s Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, GeminoidDK is the ultra-realistic, humanoid robot. The robot is modeled to look like Associate Professor Henrik Scharfe of Aalborg University in Denmark. The Geminoid DK is the first Geminoid to be modeled after a non-Japanese person. Equipped with a number of actuators in the face and torso, the robot is capable of autonomously performing breathing and blinking movements.

Junko Chihira – A Humanoid Robot from Toshiba

Junko Chihira, an ultra-realistic android created by Toshiba, works full-time in a tourist information center in Tokyo. The robot gives a brief demo loop at the Aqua City mall in the country’s Odaiba entertainment district. She will be part of a much larger effort by Japan to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Not only robotic tourist assistants will assist the country with the incoming flood of visitors from across the globe for this event, but also drones, autonomous construction site machines, and other smart facilitators will be helping as well. Junko Chihira can speak Japanese, Chinese, English, German, and even sign language.

Nadine – A Female Humanoid Social Robot

Developed by the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Nadine is one of the most realistic female humanoid social robots, looking and acting incredibly lifelike. She is able to memorize the things when people have talked to her about the next time, they get to talk to her. Nadine is a great instance of a social robot capable of becoming a personal companion, whether it is for the elderly, children, or those who require special assistance in the form of human contact.

Erica – The Humanoid Robot

Erica, a Japanese robot, which was created by Hiroshi Ishiguro, is one of the most intelligent humanoids developed in Japan with a special emphasis on her speech capabilities. While Erica cannot walk, she can easily interact with human beings and alter her facial expressions according to the conversation. The robot is an advanced android designed as a research platform to study human-robot interaction. It understands natural language, has a synthesized human-like voice, and can display a variety of facial expressions.

Thus, considering these lifelike robots, it is apparent that robots will soon become a part of our daily lives. And these kinds of robots have a particularly high potential for growth as they can take on tasks that were previously the domain of humans alone.
