Snowflake Acquires Datavolo to Boost Data Engineering in AI Data Cloud

Snowflake Proves AI is Not Just at the Tip of its Iceberg

Snowflake, an AI Data Cloud company, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Datavolo, which specialises in managing multimodal data pipelines for enterprise AI.

This move will enhance Snowflake’s capabilities in data engineering, particularly in the ‘bronze layer’ of the data lifecycle, by simplifying and scaling the ingestion of unstructured data on its platform.

The acquisition will allow Snowflake to integrate Datavolo’s technology into its unified platform, providing a more straightforward approach for data engineering teams to connect enterprise systems. This integration is expected to unlock data for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications, as well as analytics, while leveraging the scalability, performance, and governance features inherent in Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud.

Datavolo, powered by Apache NiFi—a secure data processing technology originally developed by the National Security Agency (NSA)—offers a platform for automating and managing both structured and unstructured data flows. Integrating Datavolo into Snowflake’s ecosystem will enable customers to replace complex point-to-point connectors with flexible, reusable pipelines. This will facilitate seamless data movement from cloud and on-premise sources to Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud.

The acquisition is also set to bolster Snowflake’s presence in the public sector due to Datavolo’s extensive use among federal organisations. Snowflake plans to continue supporting the Apache NiFi project, reinforcing its commitment to open standards and enhancing interoperability for its customers and the NiFi community.

“Simplicity and time-to-value are core to Snowflake’s ethos,” said Sridhar Ramaswamy, CEO of Snowflake. “By bringing Datavolo into the Snowflake fold, we are expanding how much of the data lifecycle Snowflake captures—unlocking both simplicity and cost savings for our customers, without any sacrifice to data extensibility.”

“Data engineering at scale can be incredibly costly and complex, and our aim has always been to simplify experiences for our customers so they can achieve value faster,” said Joe Witt, Co-founder and CEO of Datavolo and co-creator of Apache NiFi.

Founded in 2023 by Witt and Luke Roquet, Datavolo has rapidly established itself as a leader in building scalable and secure multimodal data pipelines for AI. The company has raised over $21 million in venture capital from investors including Citi Ventures and General Catalyst.
