In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI, the promise of transformative changes spans across a myriad of fields, from the revolutionary prospects of autonomous vehicles reshaping transportation to the sophisticated use of AI in interpreting complex medical images. The advancement of AI technologies has been nothing short of a digital renaissance, heralding a future brimming with possibilities and advancements.
However, a recent study sheds light on a concerning aspect that has been often overlooked: the increased vulnerability of AI systems to targeted adversarial attacks. This revelation calls into question the robustness of AI applications in critical areas and highlights the need for a deeper understanding of these vulnerabilities.
The Concept of Adversarial Attacks
Adversarial attacks in the realm of AI are a type of cyber threat where attackers deliberately manipulate the input data of an AI system to trick it into making incorrect decisions or classifications. These attacks exploit the inherent weaknesses in the way AI algorithms process and interpret data.
For instance, consider an autonomous vehicle relying on AI to recognize traffic signs. An adversarial attack could be as simple as placing a specially designed sticker on a stop sign, causing the AI to misinterpret it, potentially leading to disastrous consequences. Similarly, in the medical field, a hacker could subtly alter the data fed into an AI system analyzing X-ray images, leading to incorrect diagnoses. These examples underline the critical nature of these vulnerabilities, especially in applications where safety and human lives are at stake.
The Study's Alarming Findings
The study, co-authored by Tianfu Wu, an assoc. professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University, delved into the prevalence of these adversarial vulnerabilities, uncovering that they are far more common than previously believed. This revelation is particularly concerning given the increasing integration of AI in critical and everyday technologies.
Wu highlights the gravity of this situation, stating, “Attackers can take advantage of these vulnerabilities to force the AI to interpret the data to be whatever they want. This is incredibly important because if an AI system is not robust against these sorts of attacks, you don't want to put the system into practical use — particularly for applications that can affect human lives.”
QuadAttacK: A Tool for Unmasking Vulnerabilities
In response to these findings, Wu and his team developed QuadAttacK, a pioneering piece of software designed to systematically test deep neural networks for adversarial vulnerabilities. QuadAttacK operates by observing an AI system's response to clean data and learning how it makes decisions. It then manipulates the data to test the AI's vulnerability.
Wu elucidates, “QuadAttacK watches these operations and learns how the AI is making decisions related to the data. This allows QuadAttacK to determine how the data could be manipulated to fool the AI.”
In proof-of-concept testing, QuadAttacK was used to evaluate four widely used neural networks. The results were startling.
“We were surprised to find that all four of these networks were very vulnerable to adversarial attacks,” says Wu, highlighting a critical issue in the field of AI.
These findings serve as a wake-up call to the AI research community and industries reliant on AI technologies. The vulnerabilities uncovered not only pose risks to the current applications but also cast doubt on the future deployment of AI systems in sensitive areas.
A Call to Action for the AI Community
The public availability of QuadAttacK marks a significant step toward broader research and development efforts in securing AI systems. By making this tool accessible, Wu and his team have provided a valuable resource for researchers and developers to identify and address vulnerabilities in their AI systems.
The research team’s findings and the QuadAttacK tool are being presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2023). The primary author of the paper is Thomas Paniagua, a Ph.D. student at NC State, alongside co-author Ryan Grainger, also a Ph.D. student at the university. This presentation is not just an academic exercise but a call to action for the global AI community to prioritize security in AI development.

Looks like OpenAI’s need journalist’s help to make GPT-4 better. In a surprising move, it recently announced a partnership with the German media house Axel Springer to integrate the latest news from publications such as Politico and Business Insider in ChatGPT.
This partnership also brings additional benefits for Axel Springer. OpenAI will train its models using the data obtained from the news publication, and in return, they will compensate Axel Springer. This is not the first time OpenAI has partnered with a media house, earlier this year, it collaborated with the Associated Press.
Why Germany?
OpenAI does not share a good rapport with the European Union. Interestingly, back in April, Germany had considered banning ChatGPT due to privacy concerns. Now, OpenAI partnering with a German media house might provide them with some respite from government authorities.
In recent events, the EU has passed the EU AI Act, which stipulates that foundation models must comply with specific transparency obligations before being placed on the market. The EU differentiates general-purpose AI models based on risks, and OpenAI falls under the high-risk category. Axel Springer’s partnership would assist OpenAI in demonstrating to EU officials that it has not used stolen data to train its models.
Interestingly, earlier this year, OpenAI lobbied the EU and argued with European officials not to consider its general-purpose AI systems— including GPT-3, the precursor to ChatGPT, and the image generator Dall-E 2— as ‘high risk.
Moreover, during the EU discussion, Germany, France, and Italy were not in favor of imposing the act on open-source companies, and subsequently, they were exempted. Notably, Germany’s AI startup, Aleph Alpha,recently secured an impressive $500 million in a Series B round which is considered one of the European OpenAI competitors.
OpenAI’s Challenge to Grok
Interestingly, this partnership comes at a time when everyone is praising Grok for its capability to have access to real time information through X. Musk recently rolled out Grok to Premium+ subscribers on X , and in a further expansion, xAI is extending Grok to users in India and 46 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
It’s very likely that OpenAI will provide access to real time news only to ChatGPT Plus users, similar to Musk’s approach with Grok. Interestingly, OpenAI has now re-enabled ChatGPT subscriptions which were paused after OpenAI’s Devday due to high surge in traffic.
At the moment, X boasts a larger paid user base compared to ChatGPT Plus. X has roughly around 640K premium users, while, on the other hand, ChatGPT has 180 million users. However, there are no numbers available to comment on how many of them are paid users.
Grok has a huge advantage that it is not dependent on any one particular media house as such and has access to every information users post on it. Recently citizen journalism has gained immense popularity among the masses and Musk has also advocated for it.

While OpenAI is trained on data available on the internet, offering news from selected media houses could introduce bias into the responses it generates, raising concerns for OpenAI’s safety team.

Despite the drawbacks, with this partnership, ChatGPT might improve in generating accurate information and reduce hallucinations. On X, there is a vast amount of information, but discerning what is correct from what is false can be a tedious task.
A few days ago, a very interesting incident occurred where it was revealed that Grok is also accidentally trained on OpenAI’s data.

A user on X shared a screenshot where Grok’s response was based on OpenAI. However, xAI’s engineer, Igor Babuschkin, soon clarified the situation, and said, “The issue here is that the web is full of ChatGPT outputs, so we accidentally picked up some of them when we trained Grok on a large amount of web data.”
Though Grok currently has an advantage over OpenAI in providing real-time information, this can be considered OpenAI’s attempt to get back at them.

Recently, Nithin Kamath, founder and CEO of Zerodha, posted on LinkedIn a video of him talking about the risk of deep fakes in the financial industry. He highlighted how deep fake is improving and soon, it would become harder for people to figure out if a person online is real or AI-generated.

This problem will be bigger for banks that have more stringent regulatory requirements during onboarding. When bringing in a new customer, a crucial aspect is ensuring the authenticity of documents and the person opening the account.
Currently, the standard procedure involves retrieving ID or address proof data from sources like Digilocker or Aadhaar. Though this comes with hackable instances on apps other than the Orb, the possibility is still imaginable.
Concerns with World ID
Although it may appear logical in certain aspects, the extensive risk to personal freedoms and the potential for government abuse are substantial, even while considering World ID as a solution. Do we really want the government to have real-time access to our web browsing?
Analogous to how government-backed digital currency, which is different from blockchain-based cryptocurrency, empowers authorities to monitor and document each of your online financial transactions, digital ID poses a similar capability, scrutinising every click you execute online. Moreover, WorldCoin has already said that it is giving governments the permission to use its ID system.

Opera's Aria simplifies the use of artifical intelligence (AI) within the browser. Because of this simplification, you can use Aria as your go-to research tool, and avoid the likes of Google for searching.
I've been using Aria as a research tool when writing novels. But one thing I've discovered is that I often have to go back to one or more chats I've had with Aria. For example, when naming characters for a new book series, I've combined the first and last names of different classical composers to come up with character names.

The key issue is that I have to run the same chat every time I need to create a new character name. When you type the prompt, List 100 classical composer names, it can take Aria a few seconds to generate the list. It would be nice if I could keep a reference to that list, without having to copy and paste it into yet another document that's either open or in another a tab.
I like to work more efficiently. And thanks to Opera's Pinboard features, it didn't take me long to come up with a workflow to meet that need.

Essentially, you create a Pinboard for a certain category (for example, Aria Chats or Book Research), and then you pin the Aria chat to the Pinboard. Then, when you need to reference the chat later, you simply open the Pinboard, click on the pinned chat, and you're done.
