Inside Pixxel’s Spacecraft Manufacturing Facility

Indian Hyperspectral giant Pixxel yesterday finally inaugurated their much-awaited 30,000 sq ft Spacecraft Manufacturing Facility in Bengaluru—which would be crucial for manufacturing assembly, integration, and testing of their upcoming satellites.

The journey to building a facility, capable of manufacturing, assembly and integration of 20-25 smaller satellites simultaneously has been a fascinating one.

Awais Ahmed, Co-founder and CEO at Pixxel, narrated how a clique of four from BITS Pilani working out of their dorm, later moved to Bangalore expanding to a 10-member team.

Ahmed hailed ISRO Chairman S Somnath for the national agency’s continuous support as a guiding light. He recalled how the company evolved from planning launches with the Russian SOYUZ rocket to the Department of Space showing interest in launching their satellite aboard the PSLV—as the government opened the space sector to private industries.

Gauging Capability of Facility

The facility will ensure a process from concept to launch, providing a space for Pixxel’s satellites to be designed from scratch under one roof. It will play a very crucial role, as the company gears to launch at least six more satellites by June this year, including the Firefly constellation of satellites.

“We’re also working on the honeybee class of satellites which will just expand the capabilities of our satellites and these will be much larger 200 kg satellites,” he added.

The space is uniquely designed, with two modern clean rooms of ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 8 that safeguard against contaminants that could impair satellite functionality during the satellite assembly and integration process.

Additionally, it houses labs for advanced camera integration, electronics R&D, and electrical assembly; along with a mechanical workshop, a mission control room, and an office space that currently hosts 140-150 people, but has the capacity for 200.

The CEO stressed the facility’s role in Pixxel’s growth, anticipating its use for over a decade. Regarding the facility cost, he mentioned it was in the single-digit millions, and investments were completed to support Firefly satellite launches and iDEX program requirements, which is a Ministry of Defense initiative. The goal is to ensure Pixxel’s capability to scale up and meet future demands.

The focus is on regular satellite production. “In an ideal situation, if everything is optimized, it’s ready for 25 satellites every quarter, adding up to 75 satellites that we can have for every single year,” Ahmed added.

The increased capability would come in handy as the company plans to expand the satellite count to 24, which would be crucial for global coverage.

“This is why we think this facility was also important because we couldn’t do that in the previous facility that we had. You couldn’t depend on someone else to rent these facilities,” explained Ahmed.

Supply Chain

Pixxel has a diverse and extensive supply chain, spanning approximately 26 countries. Ahmed stated, “The supply chain comes predominantly from Europe, North America, and South Africa, maybe Japan a little bit as well.”

He clarified that the major share of components originates from North America and Europe. However, he underscored Pixxel’s commitment to indigenous development, mentioning that about half of the satellite is still indigenously built and designed.

“All of our electronics, structure and entire software are completely designed and written in-house,” boasted Ahmed. While acknowledging the necessity of procuring certain components like solar cell sensors, he stressed Pixxel’s intention to increase indigenous production, stating, “50% of the components from international companies, based out of 26 countries.”

Advanced, Unique and Cost-effective

Pixxel also has the rare feat of deploying the world’s first hyperspectral satellite constellation commercially from India—providing a cost advantage over competitors. He noted, “About 1/5 on each satellite that we do,” resulting in a “5x to 10x cost savings per satellite.”

However, the upcoming Firfely constellation, “Will be six times better than what NASA had done at 30 meters,” Ahmed stated.

This improvement in resolution is a distinctive feature, especially in the hyperspectral domain where achieving higher quality while keeping the satellite small and cost-effective is challenging.

He pointed out that Pixxel’s approach to building their cameras and satellites is “one of a kind literally in the world.”

These capabilities and cost-effectiveness of the information are leading to a focus on sustainability and financial independence.

“We are already a revenue-generating company today,” said Ahmed emphasising their utilisation of three satellites, indicating that they are “fully booked up to the rim” for image requests, with 50% for paying customers, 30% for potential conversion, and 20% for internal calibration and validation.

Ahmed elaborated on the enhanced capabilities of the Firefly constellation, noting, “Each satellite in the Firefly constellation will have five times the capacity compared to our initial satellites.” This increased capacity allows them to capture a substantial amount of imagery, approximately “40,000 square kilometres per satellite.”

With this, he said that they “Can continue to sustain our operations with just the revenue that we get rather than wanting to raise investment.”

Health Monitor

Going ahead they envision building a “health monitor for planet Earth” with a focus on diverse applications for both government and commercial sectors. He emphasised the core priorities, stating, “The core of our priorities and focuses [are] around use cases and applications that we think can help [build] a more sustainable base.”

The company aims to address specific challenges in existing satellite constellations, particularly in areas like early detection of crop diseases or pest infestations. Ahmed highlighted the need for a significant improvement in detail, moving from “basic crop health to identify detailed nutrient maps in soil” and addressing issues such as methane leaks and greenhouse gases.

[Exclusive] How BharatGPT Will Mark India on the Global AI Map

India is driving steadily fast to give rise to its generative AI moment. Forging ahead is the initiative led by IIT Bombay for building foundational AI models called BharatGPT, a government-backed initiative, which aims to build multilingual and multimodal models through a public private partnership (PPP). The consortium has received tremendous support from the community, with Jio’s chairman, Akash Ambani also announcing his partnership for the mission.

To understand how BharatGPT aims to integrate generative AI with Bharatiya culture, AIM got in touch with Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan from IIT Bombay, who is leading the initiative, and gained insights about what sets this mission apart from others in the field.

Ramakrishnan is an Institute Chair Professor, Professor-in-Charge, Koita Centre for Digital Health – KCDH (IIT Bombay), Co-PI for the National Disease Modelling Consortium, IIT Bombay, and a recipient of several prestigious awards including several from multi-national companies. He and his group have been regularly publishing papers at top international forums on AI/ML. He is also one of the core members of Bhashini, an Indian government initiative for the collection of multilingual data.

All about collaboration

“First and foremost, BharatGPT is not just about releasing models, it is a long-term initiative to support an entire ecosystem including startups, and breaking the silos,” Ramakrishnan explained. He emphasised that several companies are building AI models and trying to acquire computing, which is very hard at the moment.

The initiative wants to build knowledge models for research along with offering solutions to businesses. “We have realised that several AI initiatives require a lot of research,” he added. “It is not just about picking a model from somewhere and deploying it, especially if you are catering to multiple modalities.” That is why BharatGPT wants a collaborative approach between academia, the private sector which includes startups, and also the government.

Apart from IIT Bombay, other premier academic institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Mandi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIM Indore, and IIT Madras have also been intensively collaborating for the project.

Highlighting the mentorship being received from Prof. Narendra Ahuja from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Professor Bhiksha Raj from Carnegie Mellon University, Ramakrishnan said that, such mentors were very much interested in seeing an entire initiative flourish dedicated to multilingual and multimodal generative AI for the Indian context.

Ramakrishnan, along with Vishnu Vardhan, the founder and CEO of Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML), presented BharatGPT to NASSCOM on November 30th, which led to the company also partnering to foster generative AI in the ecosystem. “The presentation was extremely well received by NASSCOM as well as the CXOs and CTOs of the companies,” he emphasised.

“It is important that such initiatives are not siloed,” Ramakrishnan said that several companies have reached out for collaborations. “Academic institutions such as IITs can boast that they produce the best graduates in the world, that the companies would need in the future.” He highlighted that an initiative such as BharatGPT needs collaboration between fresh graduates and industry veterans.

“Let’s build India’s foundational model”

“We are building foundational models from scratch and that is what is keeping us busy,” Ramakrishnan highlighted. It takes a lot of effort and computing to build the ecosystem. We are acquiring compute to move this initiative beyond just a project, to actually building a generative AI lab for training foundational models and also democratising the use of AI in India.

“An ecosystem for building multi-lingual and multi-modal foundational models is what will open up a faithful avenue for Indian languages. You will hear about it soon,” Ramakrishnan said about the rise of several Indic LLMs. “The intention is that everyone gets to use them in India and there is widespread adoption by the Indian startups, not just providing models, but also giving recipes on how to build AI models.”

Even though BharatGPT is currently focused on building foundational models for India, the initiative has also been open-sourcing a lot of its work on Decile, along with licence-permitting commercial usage.

Ramakrishnan also emphasised that the solutions need to be developed across different verticals as well such as banking, healthcare, farming, etc. “Mistral got France on the AI map. We want India to get on the AI map with BharatGPT.”

He said that while we can keep writing research papers and creating graduates, it is important that all these help bolster the Indian ecosystem. “I think it’s time to not just create some AI solution for India, but a working full stack,” Ramakrishnan added.

The BharatGPT seed was sown long back

Ramakrishnan said that the public-private partnership push for AI has been there by the government for a very long time. “I was speaking to the former telecom secretary K Ramarajan in the context of the ChatGPT boom, and he encouraged me to lead the Indian language AI initiative.” This led to the birth of BharatGPT.

This led Ramakrishnan to reach out to industrialists and academic institutes, and also led to the partnership with Vishnu Vardhan for building BharatGPT, starting by focusing on the healthcare sector specifically at the Koita Centre for Digital Health at IIT Bombay. “He [Vardhan] was very forthcoming because he had already seen the impact of AI in the healthcare sector,” he added.

Ramakrishnan highlighted that the success of his Project Udaan, an Indian language end-to-end translation ecosystem that includes OCR and document analysis, led him to believe it is not just about putting out models in public. “The project had a very satisfying impact and resulted in Bharat Bhasha Tech incubated at IIT Bombay and that gave me the perspective and the confidence that it is also about creating a sense of usability in whatever we create,” he explained.

“Mr Mukesh Ambani had responded to Sam Altman to take up the challenge of building AI models in India, that is why I also reached out to him, and he was very passionate about the partnership,” said Ramakrishnan. That is what also led him to start the first phase of BharatGPT, which led to the government departments signing up for several use cases.

This also led to the name ‘BharatGPT’, and Ramakrishnan said that we might also experiment with other architectures apart from Transformers if needed in the future. “We are keeping it more open but somehow the name stuck a chord in all of us. Why sweat on it?” he laughed, saying that the initiative is broader than just GPTs.

Singapore seeks expanded governance framework for generative AI

Singapore has released a draft governance framework on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) that it says is necessary to address emerging issues, including incident reporting and content provenance.

The proposed model builds on the country's existing AI governance framework, which was first released in 2019 and last updated in 2020.

GenAI has significant potential to be transformative "above and beyond" what traditional AI can achieve, but it also comes with risks, said the AI Verify Foundation and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in a joint statement.

There is growing global consensus that consistent principles are necessary to create an environment in which GenAI can be used safely and confidently, the Singapore government agencies said.

"The use and impact of AI is not limited to individual countries," they said. "This proposed framework aims to facilitate international conversations among policymakers, industry, and the research community, to enable trusted development globally."

The draft document encompasses proposals from a discussion paper IMDA had released last June, which identified six risks associated with GenAI, including hallucinations, copyright challenges, and embedded biases, and a framework on how these can be addressed.

The proposed GenAI governance framework also draws insights from previous initiatives, including a catalog on how to assess the safety of GenAI models and testing conducted via an evaluation sandbox.

The draft GenAI governance model covers nine key areas that Singapore believes play key roles in supporting a trusted AI ecosystem. These revolve around the principles that AI-powered decisions should be explainable, transparent, and fair. The framework also offers practical suggestions that AI model developers and policymakers can apply as initial steps, IMDA and AI Verify said.

One of the nine components looks at content provenance: There needs to be transparency around where and how content is generated, so consumers can determine how to treat online content. Because it can be created so easily, AI-generated content such as deepfakes can exacerbate misinformation, the Singapore agencies said.

Noting that other governments are looking at technical solutions such as digital watermarking and cryptographic provenance to address the issue, they said these aim to label and provide additional information, and are used to flag content created with or modified by AI.

Policies should be "carefully designed" to facilitate the practical use of these tools in the right context, according to the draft framework. For instance, it may not be feasible for all content created or edited to include these technologies in the near future and provenance information also can be removed. Threat actors can find other ways to circumvent the tools.

The draft framework suggests working with publishers, including social media platforms and media outlets, to support the embedding and display of digital watermarks and other provenance details. These also should be properly and securely implemented to mitigate the risks of circumvention.

Another key component focuses on security where GenAI has brought with it new risks, such as prompt attacks infected through the model architecture. This allows threat actors to exfiltrate sensitive data or model weights, according to the draft framework.

It recommends that refinements are needed for security-by-design concepts that are applied to a systems development lifecycle. These will need to look at, for instance, how the ability to inject natural language as input may create challenges when implementing the appropriate security controls.

The probabilistic nature of GenAI also may bring new challenges to traditional evaluation techniques, which are used for system refinement and risk mitigation in the development lifecycle.

The framework calls for the development of new security safeguards, which may include input moderation tools to detect unsafe prompts as well as digital forensics tools for GenAI, used to investigate and analyze digital data to reconstruct a cybersecurity incident.

"A careful balance needs to be struck between protecting users and driving innovation," the Singapore government agencies said of the draft government framework. "There have been various international discussions pulling in the related and pertinent topics of accountability, copyright, and misinformation, among others. These issues are interconnected and need to be viewed in a practical and holistic manner. No single intervention will be a silver bullet."

With AI governance still a nascent space, building international consensus also is key, they said, pointing to Singapore's efforts to collaborate with governments such as the US to align their respective AI governance framework.

Singapore is accepting feedback on its draft GenAI governance framework until March 15.

Microsoft Adds Copilot Pro for Individuals to Generative AI Offerings

Microsoft’s generative AI assistant Copilot for Microsoft 365 is now available for businesses interested in providing the product to fewer than 299 seats. The Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscription for business use lets employees use data from across their company’s Microsoft products to provide more data to the generative AI, letting it use more information in context. Microsoft assures customers that Microsoft’s enterprise-grade security and compliance apply to data used by the generative AI, too.

In addition, Microsoft announced yesterday that Copilot Pro, a plan for individual power users, is now available. People interested in using Copilot on the go can now access it through either a Copilot app or the Microsoft 365 mobile app.

Copilot runs on the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, which is only available in North America and Europe. More information about opting in to these regions to use the service elsewhere can be found via Microsoft.

New Copilot for Microsoft 365 plan was made for SMBs

Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscriptions used to be available only for customers interested in purchasing 300 seats; now, small and medium sized businesses can purchase between one and 299 seats.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 will be available for purchase on top of existing Microsoft 365 Business Premium and Business Standard subscriptions. Customers of Office 365 E3 and E5 can now use Copilot for Microsoft 365 without a Microsoft 365 license.

A major difference between Copilot Pro and Copilot for Microsoft 365 for business is that the latter comes with Copilot integration into Microsoft Teams.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 was developed in part using feedback from an early SMB adopters’ program, said Brenna Robinson, general manager for Microsoft 365 for SMBs at Microsoft in an email to TechRepublic.

“Customers tell us that Copilot helps them cut through the noise and clear out their busy work, so they can concentrate on the work that truly matters – and that is growing their businesses,” Robinson said.

Copilot Pro plan offers latest generative AI models to power users

Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers can now use Copilot generative AI features with the Copilot Pro plan. The $20 per person per month plan is intended for super users who want faster generative AI models – starting with OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo during peak times – and to be able to sync Copilot work across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote on PC, Mac and iPad; the Excel version is in preview.

Microsoft is targeting AI image creators with this plan, offering Image Creator from Designer (formerly Bing Image Creator) with more detailed image quality compared to the free version and with landscape image format.

Copilot Pro subscribers will get access to Copilot GPT Builder when it is available – the company said it’s coming soon. Copilot GPT Builder, like OpenAI’s GPT Builder, lets people create custom chatbots using natural language prompts.

Copilot available on mobile and in the Microsoft 365 app

Android and iOS users can now access the Copilot app (Figure A); they’ll be able to sync chats and queries from their phone to their Windows PC. The Copilot app connects users to GPT-4 and Dall-E 3.

Individual Microsoft account holders on Android and iOS mobile phones will be able to access Copilot in the Microsoft 365 mobile app later in 2024. Microsoft said on Jan. 15, 2024 that Copilot in the Microsoft 365 mobile app is rolling out “over the next month.”

The Copilot app and Microsoft 365 app can be found in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Microsoft offers custom GPTs

Like OpenAI, Microsoft is betting on GPTs to show people what specific uses generative AI has, from organizing trips and presentations to offering recipes. Copilot GPTs are now available based on select topics. Microsoft says the first GPTs will offer natural language conversations around “fitness, travel, cooking and more.” More GPTs are likely to become available as Copilot Pro subscribers create GPTs on the Copilot GPT Builder.

Competitors to Copilot Pro and Copilot for Microsoft 365 for business

The main competitors to these Copilot offerings are from OpenAI and Google. OpenAI has its own power user subscription, ChatGPT Plus, and a version with enterprise-grade privacy and services called ChatGPT Enterprise. Google’s Bard extensions add generative AI to Gmail, Docs, Drive and other Google services.

How OpenAI plans to help protect elections from AI-generated mischief

It's 2024, which means that the next presidential election is looming on the horizon. As if election season didn't present enough challenges, this year, there's a new factor to consider — generative AI.

Both AI-generated images and text can look so realistic that it can be difficult to distinguish what's real from what's fake. This can be especially harmful during elections when fake news articles or AI-generated images can sway public opinion.

To address these concerns, on Monday, via a blog post, OpenAI shared its plan for approaching worldwide elections, including changes to its Usage Policies for ChatGPT and APIs.

One of the highlights includes not allowing users to build applications for political campaigning or lobbying, or that can deter people from participation in democratic processes, such as discouraging voting. OpenAI also does not allow the creation of chatbots that pretend to be real people.

OpenAI is also working on different authentication efforts to help make it clear when an image has been fabricated. To do so, early this year, OpenAI will implement the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity's digital credentials.

Through these credentials, users can see details about the content's provenance using cryptography on images generated by DALL-E 3. OpenAI is also experimenting with a new tool for detecting images generated by DALL-E 3, which is already seeing promising results.

The company also revealed it is working on giving ChatGPT access to real-time news reporting globally, including attributions and links, to combat misinformation.

In the US, when users ask ChatGPT for voting information, the chatbot will automatically direct users to CanIVote.org, an authoritative site for US voting information where users can find information on whether they are registered to vote, where to vote, and more.

It is important to note that many of these precautions have yet to be implemented, so it is essential to be cautious when consuming election news and to always verify the sources for any information you find on the web.

Baidu denies any ties to reported Chinese military training on its GenAI chatbot

Baidu has refuted suggestions it has ties to scientists who say they are training a Chinese military system based on the tech giant's generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbot, Ernie Bot.

Media reports emerged on Friday that a university linked to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China was training the military's AI system with Baidu's large language model (LLM). Researchers from the Information Engineering University fed the LLM with data on weapons and forces deployed in past conflicts to predict combat strategy, the South China Morning Post first reported.

Citing an academic paper published last month in the Chinese journal Command Control & Simulation, the SCMP report said other LLMs also were used, including GPT3.5 and GPT4. The LLM then was prompted to generate combat strategies and outcomes based on the training data.

In the paper, the researchers referenced the US military invasion of Libya in 2011 and said they used combat tactics employed by both sides of the conflict, and input the desired targets for Ernie Bot to predict the US army's strategy.

The research team said the simulated results could aid decision-making and be used to further train and enhance the LLM's knowledge and cognitive understanding. The goal was to improve AI-powered military systems and enable them to better understand human intentions, which was critical as human adversaries can be unpredictable.

The researchers added that their work was in its early stage and carried out only for research.

Baidu's shares took a dive after reports on the research surfaced.

The Chinese tech vendor since has refuted having any links to the authors of the paper or the university. In a statement referring to the academic paper, Baidu said Ernie Bot is available to and can be used by the general public.

Baidu added that it had "not engaged in any business collaboration or provided any tailored service" to the team that penned the academic report or any institutions with which the researchers are affiliated.

It noted that the original SCMP article has been amended to reflect its statement.

Baidu said: "[We are] committed to operating its AI-related products and businesses in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and best corporate practices."

The Chinese search engine and autonomous vehicle maker last August released Ernie Bot to the general public in hopes of gathering user feedback to improve the platform. It also plans to release AI-native apps that it said would deliver four key GenAI capabilities, encompassing reasoning, memory, generation, and understanding.

Ernie Bot, among other touted capabilities, can generate text, images, audio, and video given a text prompt, and can deliver voice in several local Chinese dialects, including Sichuan. Since its introduction with limited access in March, the AI model has gained proficiency in more than 200 genres of writing, clocking a 1.6-fold increase in content quality, according to Baidu. Five plugins were also added to Ernie Bot this month, including Baidu Search, data analytics and visualization, and text-to-video.

In November last year, China's Defense Ministry urged nations to be "prudent and responsible" in their use of AI in military, according to a report by state-owned media China Daily. It noted that the Chinese government paid close attention to security risks posed by AI in military applications. "China is opposed to using AI advantages to undermine the sovereignty of other countries," said the Defense Ministry's spokesperson Wu Qian.

In other news this week, China's third-generation quantum computer Origin Wukong has processed 33,871 tasks for users worldwide since it became operational on January 6, reported state-run media agency Xinhua.

Users from more than 60 countries remotely accessed the quantum computer at least 350,000 times, with those from the US leading the pack in terms of frequency, according to the Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center. The quantum computer runs on a 72-qubit local-made chip.

The retail industry is facing mounting pressure from the economic headwinds and evolving consumer expectations. To better understand the widening gap between shopper demands and the current retail offering, IBM has conducted a global study on this matter.

IBM released the findings of its third biennial consumer study named “Revolutionize retail with AI everywhere: Customers won't wait." The findings of the report were compiled by surveying 20,000 global consumers across 26 countries on their digital habits and use of AI.

One of the key findings of the report is that consumers are dissatisfied with retail experiences. Only 9 percent of the respondents were content with in-store shopping, while only 14 percent were content with online shopping.

Interestingly, consumers surveyed shared their strong interest in using AI technology to enhance their shopping experience. Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they would like to use AI applications and 80 percent who haven’t used the technology for shopping reported an interest in trying it.

While the consumer interest in using AI seems high, the report showed less consumer satisfaction in using current AI assistants. Only about one-third of the respondents who used a virtual assistant were satisfied with the experience. Nearly 20 percent were so disappointed that they didn't want to use AI virtual assistants again.

To understand how AI assistants could help shoppers in the future, Datanami got in touch with IBM executive Luq Niazi, Global Managing Partner, Industries & Global Consumer Industry Leader, IBM Consulting.

Niazi shared that “IBM’s 2024 Consumer Study reveals a growing interest among consumers in using AI tools during their shopping journey, with more than half saying they would like to use virtual assistants as they shop. However, there's a significant gap between consumer expectations and the current capabilities of these AI tools across the spectrum of retailers they buy from.”

According to Niazi, most current AI assistants fall short in their ability to understand and respond effectively to user queries in the shopping moment. He shared that “Retailers can transform the shopping experience by offering personalized, efficient service while also freeing up human customer service representatives for more complex requests, ultimately leading to higher consumer satisfaction and a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving retail market.”

The market indicators are pointing to a need to adopt AI technology in the consumer retail experience. Similar trends are seen in other industries. IBM’s recent CEO Guide to Generative AI shows that 84 percent of companies expect to invest in and use text-based generative AI assistants with customers by 2025. In an earlier study, IBM found that three out of four CEOs surveyed believe the organization with the most advanced generative AI will have a competitive advantage.

There seems to be keen interest in organizations to invest in AI to harness the enormous potential of this technology. The IBM study on retail experience highlights an opportunity for retailers to integrate AI into both digital and physical shopping experiences to meet evolving consumer demands. This will help create shopping experiences that are efficient, intuitive, and personalized.
