Artificial intelligence is not new to world of chess. Deep Blue is still fresh in our memory for the way it could defeat world’s reigning chess grand master, Garry Kasparov. Well, at the end of the day the victory of machines over human doesn’t inspire much excitement. Thinking why? Think Robocup, an adrenaline-pumping game like football where all the players are robots. Now the game gets interesting. Right? It is an experimental project aimed at advancing robotics. The research goals include studying cooperative multi-robot and multi-agent systems in dynamic adversarial environments.
It all started in the year 1997 with an aim to develop a robot team capable of playing and winning against the human team. Experts consider Robocup a grand challenge for AI and robotics as it serves as a training ground for technology-driven future generations. In a recent paper published in Science Robotics, it was confirmed that human motion data and other machine learning systems enable players improve gaming skills and perform better.
Not only that AI develops robotic footballers, but the gaming strategies help AI learn some tricks for itself. Self-driving cars and care robots can pick threads of learned integrated decision-making at multiple scales in a multiagent setting. RoboCup, for example, expanded its efforts to extend the efforts into new areas including new competitive leagues featuring autonomous service robots. For instance, RoboCup Home league is organized to solely develop robotic personal and domestic serivce robots. In the RoboCup Rescue league, the robotic teams help advanced robotic tools for emergency responders.
