ChatGPT, an advanced language model created by OpenAI that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with the chatbot. The language model can answer questions and assist you with tasks, such as composing emails, essays, and code. When asked to describe itself, ChatGPT states, “It is a powerful language model that can revolutionize the way we interact with and utilize artificial intelligence in our daily lives. Its ability to generate human-like text allows it to assist with a wide range of tasks that involve language processing, making it a valuable tool for businesses, researchers, and individuals alike”.

But what happens when you put its humor on test? Let’s find out

ChatGPT can reproduce and explain certain types of humor, particularly puns, based on learned patterns. In a recent study, ChatGPT’s sense of humor was put on the test. In a series of exploratory experiments around jokes, i.e., generation, explanation, and detection, we seek to understand ChatGPT’s capability to grasp and reproduce human humor.

Since the model itself is not accessible, the study conductors applied prompt-based experiments. Their empirical evidence indicates that jokes are not hard-coded but mostly also not newly generated by the model. Over 90% of 1008 generated jokes were the same 25 Jokes. The system accurately explains valid jokes but also comes up with fictional explanations for invalid jokes. Joke-typical characteristics can mislead ChatGPT in the classification of jokes. ChatGPT has not solved computational humor yet but it can be a big leap toward ”funny” machines.

The AI struggles to produce original humorous content and has limitations in recognizing humor outside its learned patterns. Digital marketers should consider these limitations when using AI like ChatGPT for generating engaging, humor-infused content.
