Wipro Trains 44,000 Employees in Advanced AI

Wipro chief Srini Pallia, during the company’s Q2 FY 2025 earnings call, revealed that the Indian IT company has won two large deals in the quarter. He mentioned that the second deal is with a software technology company that has selected Wipro to support its product development and IT operations end-to-end.

“This is a total outsourcing deal, where Wipro will consolidate vendors, take over engineering, applications, infrastructure, and operations for this client. Additionally, we will implement GenAI powered solutions to solve their business challenges and deliver operational efficiencies,” said Pallia.

Pallia further emphasised that he believes all Wipro employees should adopt an AI-first mindset, have the right skill set, and use the right tool set in their work for all clients.

“We have now trained and certified over 44,000 employees on advanced AI, and we also have a significant number of employees actively using AI developer tools across the company for all our clients,” said Pallia.

“We are developing talent closely aligned with our clients’ business needs. For this, we have established account-specific academies to upskill employees with a clear roadmap for building capabilities relevant to the industry and technology of our clients.”

Pallia wants Wipro to be AI-powered

Moreover, speaking of Wipro’s AI strategy, Pallia said, “There are three categories of AI projects that we do: AI-led projects, AI-infused projects, and AI-powered solutions,” adding that these solutions target industry-specific challenges. AI-powered solutions, for instance, are cross-industry and prepackaged, leveraging generative AI as a core element.

“You do AI infusion when you already have managed services around a process, infrastructure, or application that has been ongoing, but you want to improve the customer experience,” he added.

He noted that Wipro’s large deals pipeline is also benefiting from its GenAI initiatives, contributing to an impressive $1.5 billion in large deals—the highest in 10 quarters.

Last year, Wipro announced that it would invest $1 billion over the next three years. Wipro’s generative AI initiatives are part of a broader strategy to integrate AI into every tool and solution it offers, creating a comprehensive AI-first innovation ecosystem known as Wipro ai360.

Wipro has also partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to launch a Center of Excellence on Generative AI. This center aims to support foundational and applied research in generative AI and develop R&D projects that gauge the commercial potential of these technologies.

Pallia also pointed to the growing number of GCCs (Global Capability Centers) in India and Wipro’s strategy to partner with them, particularly in leveraging talent trained in GenAI.

“We have trained 230,000 employees of Wipro in generative AI and have 44,000 advanced AI experts. We have the talent, and we can groom the talent, and GCCs and us can partner to help them execute projects. So, I see that as a win-win for both of us,” he said, adding that Wipro is prepared to partner with them, not just on the BoT, but also on many projects.

Meanwhile, Infosys has finally revealed that it is working on small language models for its clients for various applications. “It’s an incredible approach that leverages various open source components along with a narrow set of industry data and Infosys’ proprietary dataset,” said Salil Parekh, CEO and MD, during the Q2 2025 earnings call.
