Walmart Global Tech recently announced that it will be leasing 1 million sq ft office space in Bengaluru from Prestige Group to set up a GCC (global capability centre). This is one of the largest deals ever, and comes with a three-year lock-in period.
With this, Walmart Global Tech is looking to expand to the next level in India. The company currently operates offices in Bangalore, Chennai, and Gurugram (India), Bentonville (AR), San Jose (Costa Rica), and Hoboken (NJ), Mexico City (Mexico), Reston (VA), Silicon Valley (CA), Seattle (WA), and Tel Aviv (Israel) through the acquisitions of Aspectiva and Zeekit.
Last week, Walmart Global Tech India won Minskey Award for ‘Best AI Implementation in a GCC/Captive Environment,’ at Cypher 2024, for leveraging AI to revolutionse its retail operations, particularly in supply chain optimisation and customer experience enhancement. The company has deployed several AI models to predict inventory needs and customer preferences, alongside improving efficiency and setting a new standard for retail technology.
In April, the company also partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to launch the Walmart Centre for Tech Excellence, focusing on advancing research in AI, machine learning, and computer science, while providing fellowships and mentoring opportunities to nurture talent from tier 2 and tier 3 institutes.
Earlier this year, Walmart partnered with IIT Madras to launch the Walmart Centre for Tech Excellence, aimed at empowering MSMEs in the manufacturing and retail sectors by developing AI and digitisation solutions to drive operational efficiency, profitability, and upskilling in India’s MSME community.
Furthermore, Walmart is looking to triple its sourcing from India to $10 billion annually by 2027, as part of its commitment to supporting Indian MSMEs and fostering job creation, while leveraging initiatives like Walmart Vriddhi to modernize local suppliers and expand its global supply chain.
