Mercedez-Benz Gets A ChatGPT In-Car Voice Control Upgrade

Mercedes-Benz is set to add OpenAI’s ChatGPT within its in-house multimedia system MBUX Voice Assistant as part of an exclusive beta program available only in the US. This allows drivers of more than 900,000 vehicles equipped with MBUX to engage in more dynamic conversations with the onboard AI.

The integration will improve MBUX’s natural language understanding enabling it to respond to a broader range of topics. Customers will not only be able to issue voice commands but also ask for more detailed information.

Mercedes is leveraging Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service to ensure enterprise-grade security, privacy, and reliability. Conversation data will be collected and stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it will undergo anonymisation and analysis. The company guarantees the protection of all customer data from misuse, with no access granted to Microsoft.

MBUX, or Mercedes-Benz User Experience, is an advanced infotainment system introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2018. It features a large touchscreen display and responsive voice control. Users can easily control various functions, such as changing radio stations or adjusting climate control, using voice commands. The system can even operate non-infotainment features like the sunroof or heated seats.

The US-exclusive beta program starts on June 16. Eligible customers can join by saying “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program” to MBUX. They’ll be guided through installing the ChatGPT patch, which may require connecting a mobile device. Mercedes-Benz’s website has a list of over 25 supported vehicles for the beta program. The beta program will run for three months. Afterwards, it will go offline temporarily while Mercedes-Benz uses the data to improve the model before the official launch.

At CES 2023, Mercedes-Benz made a major breakthrough in autonomous vehicle technology by achieving Level 3 certification for its Drive Pilot system. This makes it the first automaker to reach this level in the country. The system allows drivers to legally take their hands off the wheel and engage in secondary tasks while being prepared to regain control if needed. This advancement is significant in the industry, as Level 3 cars have advanced “environmental detection” capabilities and surpass rival Tesla’s Level 2 technology.
