Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Meets PM Modi to Shape India’s Responsible AI Future

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss the company’s plans for expanding its operations in India and advancing the development of safe and beneficial artificial intelligence (AI) in the country.

According to Anthropic, the discussion centred on cultivating India’s AI innovation ecosystem and ensuring that AI development aligns with democratic values, serving diverse populations and industries, including healthcare, education, and agriculture.

In a post on X, Amodei said, “Today I met with PM Narendra Modi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India — where Claude Code use is up 5× since June.”

Prime Minister Modi has set an ambitious vision for India’s AI future, one that balances innovation with responsibility and ensures technology serves all of India’s people,” Amodei added. “We’re grateful to everyone we’ve met this week — customers, partners, policymakers and researchers.”

The meeting comes days after Anthropic announced plans to open its first India office in early 2026. The company said it will hire local teams and collaborate with startups and research institutions to support India’s growing AI ecosystem. The company on Friday also hosted a Dev Day event in Bengaluru in partnership with Accel.

Anthropic’s expansion aligns with a broader trend of global AI firms establishing a presence in India. Both OpenAI and Perplexity AI have recently announced plans to set up local operations, as India’s large developer base and policy support make it a strategic hub for AI innovation.

Separately, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon also met with the Prime Minister to discuss strengthening cooperation in semiconductors, AI, and 6G development.

“Thank you PM Modi for the great conversation on fostering a broader partnership between Qualcomm and India in support of the IndiaAI and India Semiconductor Missions, as well as the transition to 6G,” Amon posted on X. “We are encouraged by the opportunities to develop an Indian ecosystem across AI smartphones, PCs, smart glasses, auto, industrial and more.”

The back-to-back meetings highlight India’s growing role as a strategic hub for global technology firms. Both Anthropic and Qualcomm have expressed interest in supporting government-led initiatives such as IndiaAI and the India Semiconductor Mission, which will accelerate domestic innovation and manufacturing in emerging technologies.
