After Skoda, Audi Integrates ChatGPT into Cars

Starting July, Audi will integrate the generative AI-based chatbot ChatGPT into its vehicles’ infotainment systems through the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

This feature will be available in approximately two million Audi models manufactured since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3).

Owners can interact with their cars using natural language and receive information seamlessly while driving. Future models including the Q6 e-tron1, will also benefit from this integration, utilising Cerence Chat Pro to extend the capabilities of the Audi assistant.

The integration of ChatGPT can enhance the functionality of voice control in Audi vehicles. Drivers can use voice commands to manage infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning systems and ask general knowledge questions.

“With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications,” stated Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development at Audi.

“In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.”

ChatGPT Powered Vehicles

However, Audi is not the first automobile company to incorporate LLM based chatbots.

Mercedes-Benz was the first one to expand AI usage by integrating ChatGPT into the MBUX Voice Assistant in 2023. A beta program for over 900,000 U.S. vehicles with the MBUX infotainment system began on June 16, 2023, making voice control more intuitive.

Additionally, at CES 2024, Volkswagen Group introduced Cerence Inc.’s Chat Pro, an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration, to its European lineup via a cloud update.
