Salesforce Confident in India’s Growth Amid Push for Local Solutions

As India intensifies its push for local solutions, Salesforce, the US-based cloud computing and customer relationship management (CRM) company, has expressed confidence in its continued growth in the country.

Arundhati Bhattacharya, President & CEO of Salesforce South Asia, conveyed optimism about the company’s role in India, despite the government’s increasing emphasis on homegrown solutions.

“The government’s attitude remains welcoming. Global players like Salesforce will continue to contribute to India’s growth by creating jobs, nurturing talent, and advancing innovation,” Bhattacharya said.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently endorsed Zoho’s suite of productivity tools, urging businesses and citizens to adopt indigenous platforms in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “swadeshi” (local products) campaign. While the push for local alternatives gains momentum, Bhattacharya emphasised that Salesforce’s operations in India remain essential not only for local clients but also for the global market.

In June 2024, Salesforce announced the launch of its Public Sector division in India to drive transformation in government services. The division is focused on empowering government agencies and public sector organisations to enhance citizen experiences using Salesforce technology. This move underlines the company’s commitment to contributing to India’s digital transformation.

Bhattacharya discussed these efforts during a roundtable focused on Salesforce’s AgentForce platform, designed specifically for the public sector, held in Bengaluru on September 25.

AgentForce aims to bridge the gap between citizen expectations and government offerings by enabling seamless interactions and improving the efficiency of public services. While Salesforce has been in talks with both state and central governments about AgentForce, Bhattacharya refrained from disclosing any closed contracts.

According to the company’s internal survey data, 86% of global citizens expect governments to offer more relevant services proactively. The survey suggests that the public sector can meet this demand by providing 24/7 support, responding more quickly to citizen needs, and improving data security. Additionally, nearly two-thirds (62%) of Indian constituents report missing deadlines due to complicated or confusing interactions with government services.

Data Privacy and AI Adoption in India

India has long been a critical base for Salesforce, which now employs over 13,000 people in the country. The company collaborates closely with Indian IT firms and is actively involved in government skilling initiatives aimed at bridging the tech talent gap.

Regarding AI’s impact on the business landscape, Bhattacharya acknowledged that AI adoption has faced some setbacks but sees these as opportunities for learning and improvement.

“It’s important to experiment and learn. Every failure teaches us how to do things better,” she said. She also highlighted Salesforce’s AI-driven initiatives that have shown success, such as automating responses for faster service.

Bhattacharya also addressed concerns over data privacy, particularly in government services. While there are valid concerns about data handling, she noted that the government is equally focused on ensuring data accessibility for better public service delivery.

“The challenge lies in finding the balance between privacy and accessibility,” she said, emphasising the need for data protection while also enabling actionable insights for improved services.

Finally, Bhattacharya discussed evolving hiring trends at Salesforce in light of AI disruption. She revealed that the company had redeployed 4,000 employees across various functions, ensuring they are directly connected to client sites.

“It’s about ensuring that we are directly addressing client needs and delivering as per their expectations,” Bhattacharya said.

Bhattacharya’s comments underscore Salesforce’s confidence in India’s continued role as a global tech hub. The company views the Indian government’s focus on local solutions as an opportunity to strengthen its global position while contributing to India’s technological development.
